In the sky, in the infinite presence of space, when there were only two of us, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope observed two galaxies in a cosmic dance. These galaxies are located about 160 million light years from Earth. The distance between the centres of the galaxies is about 67,000 light years, while the distance between the nearest galaxies is about 40,000 light years. Although it seems quite large considering these distances, when the galaxies are quite close to each other, the galaxy on the right forms a large "tidal tail", possibly distorting it into a spiral.
Image description:
A large spiral galaxy is seen with a smaller neighbouring galaxy filled with colourful dust clouds. The neighbouring galaxy appears to emerge from one of the spiral arms, extending towards the main galaxy with a long, faint tail of stars. In the background, a bright star appears and several small, distant galaxies are observed.
What do you think these two galaxies are dancing to?
