This nebula goes by several names: Calabash Nebula, OH 231.8+04.2 and Rotten Egg Nebula due to its high sulfur content. Although it is known by different names, it provides an impressive view of the death process of a Sun-like low-mass star.
This 2017 image shows the star undergoing a rapid transformation from a red giant to a planetary nebula while blowing out outer layers of gas and dust into the surrounding space.
Image description:
Yellow-orange glowing lobes extend outward from a central star, while blue shock waves extend outward at the outer edges. A few stars punctuate the black background of space.
