Waverly Hills hospital begins to serve in Kentucky, a state of the United States of America, in 1910. The hospital, a small 2-storey building, was converted into a 5-storey building in 1924 due to the spread of tuberculosis after being able to treat 50 patients.

The patient capacity is 400 people. However, due to the tuberculosis epidemic, it had to exceed its capacity. Thousands of people died in Waverly Hills hospital because there was no treatment for tuberculosis.

Until streptomycin (an antibiotic used against germs that cause diseases such as tubercle bacillus, anthrax, diphtheria, diphtheria, plague, meningitis, pneumonia) was found, most of the patients with tuberculosis died in the Waverly Hills Sanatorium, and a tunnel was built so that other patients would not see them die. The bodies of patients who died of tuberculosis are carried through this tunnel called the ‘Death Tunnel’. Through this 150 metre long tunnel, the dead are taken out.

According to a rumour about Waverly Hills Sanatorium, in 1928 a nurse committed suicide by hanging herself in room 502. In 1932, another nurse fell out of the window of room 502. Whether this was a suicide or a murder remains unsolved. According to some information recorded in the records, people who saw the incident from the outside stated that the woman jumped out of the window but disappeared before she hit the floor.

The hospital, which gained a bad reputation in this way, was closed in 1961 with the discovery of tuberculosis treatment. In 1962, it reopened as a rest home for the elderly under the name ‘Woodhaven Geriatric Centre’.

The treatment methods of the period were very painful. Experimental treatments are applied. These experimental treatments cause skin damage in patients. Some patients even became unrecognisable due to these skin damages.

Electroshock therapy, which was considered effective at the time, was widely used in various diseases. Budget cuts between 1960 and 1970 led to dire conditions. This also led to abuse against patients and the hospital was closed by the state in 1982.

Moreover, especially during the treatment of tuberculosis, the treatment was a brutal torture under the name of treatment. In order to reduce the spread of bacteria, ultraviolet rays were applied to the patient's lungs. This was done in sun rooms using artificial light.

A balloon was surgically inserted into the patient's lung and filled with air to expand the lung. It was even removed from the chest so that the muscles, ribs and lungs could expand further and receive more oxygen. This procedure was seen as a ‘last resort’ and the majority of patients who underwent it died.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium is a hospital famous for its paranormal phenomena. Children playing ball in the corridors, whispers heard in the death tunnel, female figures jumping out of the glass, shadows crawling on the windows... It is believed that paranormal events are caused by angry spirits because the treatments are not humane but brutal and many people have lost their lives.

It is also claimed that paranormal events are mostly experienced in the ‘Tunnel of Death’.

Even visitors to the Waverly Hills Sanatorium today claim to still hear voices and screams in the Tunnel of Death. People living in the immediate vicinity of the hospital claim to see shadows in the building and hear whispers and screams.

Waverly Hills Sanatorium, famous as the most haunted hospital in the eastern USA, has also been the subject of many series, films and TV shows.
