Mezopotamya mitolojisinde yeraltı dünyası Kur'un tanrıçası olan Ereşkigal, Sümer mitlerinde krallığında hüküm verebilen ve kanun koyabilen tek kişidir. Antik Sümer şiiri olan İnanna'nın Ölüler Diyarına inişinde İnanna'nın ablası olarak tasvir edilir.

Ereşkigal'ı içeren iki ana efsane vardır. İlki İnanna'nın yeraltı dünyasına iniş hikayesi ve ikincisi Ereşkigal'ın tanrı Nergal ile evlenmesinin hikayesidir.

Ona adanmış ana tapınak Kutha'da bulunmuştur.

Sümer inanışına göre, önceden yeraltını tek başına Ereşkigal yönetir. Tanrıların bir şölenine çağrılınca yeraltından ayrılmadığı için kendi yerine bir temsilci gönderir. Bütün tanrılar bu temsilciyi ayağa kalkıp selamlar, sadece tanrı Nergal yerinden kalkmaz. Bunu duyan ve çok kızan Ereşkigal, tanrı Nergal’i yakalatıp yeraltına getirir. Ama Nergal, cehennemin içini alt-üst ederek Ereşkigal’i tahtından indirir. Yeraltının kraliçesi olur ve Ereşkigal’le evlenir.

Ereshkigal, the goddess of the underworld Kur in Mesopotamian mythology, is the only person who can rule and legislate in his kingdom in Sumerian myths. She is portrayed as Inanna's older sister in the ancient Sumerian poem Inanna's descent into the Netherworld.

All the gods stand up and greet this representative, only the god Nergal does not rise from his seat. Ereshkigal, who heard this and was very angry, captured the god Nergal and brought him to the underworld. But Nergal dethrones Ereshkigal, turning the interior of hell upside down. She becomes queen of the underworld and marries Ereshkigal.
