When you read the title, you may be a little disgusted and a little panicked. We have come up with a very interesting piece of information. Read on to find out this information to sell in the media.
You have more bacteria in your mouth than people in the world. Your mouth is a great place for germs. The bright white plateaus, dark crevices and slimy surfaces have steamy temperatures of 95 degrees Fahrenheit. Microbes bathe in the 100 per cent humidity caused by saliva and feed on sugar and other carbohydrates. Some scientists from the faculty of the Harvard School of Dentistry have found, and are still finding, 615 different species of bacteria living in the oral cavity.
The researchers (very patient) carefully collected all the dental plaque from all surfaces of each tooth. It weighs an average of 10 mg. But the teeth make up 1/20 of the mouth. To get the total biomass, including cheeks, tongue, etc., you need to multiply 10 mg by 20. We also know that 1 mg of oral biomass contains about 100 million microbes. By multiplying the number of microbes 1 mg by 20, we get the total number of microbes in the entire oral cavity: 100 million germs x 20 mg biomass = 20 billion oral germs.
Even more interestingly, years of detecting and identifying mouth inhabitants have revealed that the bacteria living in healthy mouths can be quite different from those living in diseased mouths.
Isn't that interesting?
